Nestled in the hillocks of Nuwara Eliya in Sri Lanka, The Bellwood Manor exudes contemporary elegance and old world charm at its best. A family owned luxury boutique hotel in the heart of ‘Little England’, the story dates back to the era of the British colonial period in the 19th Century when the quaint town of Nuwara Eliya came to be.
In 1877, James Leonard Bell purchased a property in Sri Lanka, then referred to as Ceylon, from Henry Turnour Armitage and named it “Bellwood”. Later in 1881, the property was converted into one of the first guest houses on the island by Wade Ellen MacKenzie.
The country style manor was later purchased by M.S. Milne in 1920, and it became the Milne family home for a period. Thereafter, it was renovated in the 1930s and operated as the ‘Junior Welcombe Hotel’ during the 1940s. Mr. Dharmadasa Witharana Gamage took over the property in 1968, and it has since been passed down the generations for over five decades.
The story of The Bellwood Manor is a testament to the enduring legacy of Sri Lanka’s colonial past. The boutique hotel’s rich history and elegant design are a reflection of the country’s diverse cultural influences, from the British colonial era to present day modernism. Today, it stands as a stunning example of Ceylonese heritage infused with modern Sri Lankan hospitality.
In order to restore the manor to its former glory, it was carefully restored, all whilst preserving its Victorian architecture and adding modern amenities and luxury finishing touches. The restoration of The Bellwood Manor was a labour of love, with no detail overlooked. From the flooring, the intricate ceiling mouldings to decorative features, each and every nook of the space is carefully curated. The interior of the premises infuses a mix of modernism, perfectly juxtaposed with old world charm and luxury. The bedrooms are fitted with plush bedding, fine linens, and luxurious facilities and amenities.
The Bellwood Manor now features eight beautifully appointed guest rooms, each with its own unique character and charm. With a plethora of offerings, guests can relax and curl up with a book at the library, spend some time in the game room or enjoy a meal in the elegant dining room. The gardens surrounding the property are beautifully landscaped, with manicured lawns, colourful roses, and lush greenery.
One of the unique features of The Bellwood Manor is its location. Situated in the heart of Nuwara Eliya, it offers easy access to all the town’s attractions and amenities. Guests can take a stroll through the nearby Victoria Park, visit Lake Gregory, visit the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club for a game of golf, or explore the town’s bustling market and shops.
